Tracing the Magellanic Clouds Back in Time

چکیده
A solution is presented for the past motions of the Magellanic Clouds, the Milky Way galaxy, and the Andromeda Nebula, fitted to the measured velocities of the Clouds and M31, under some simplifying assumptions. The galaxies are modeled as isolated bodies back to redshift about 10, when their velocities relative to the general expansion of the universe were small, consistent with the gravitational instability picture for the growth of structure. Mass outside the Local Group is modeled as a third massive dynamical actor that is responsible for the angular momentum of the Clouds. A plausible solution under these assumptions requires that the circular velocity of the Milky Way is in the range 200 < ∼ vc < ∼ 230 km s−1. The solution seems to be unique up to the modest variations allowed by the choices of vc and the position of the exterior mass. In this solution the proto-Magellanic Clouds at high redshift were near the South pole of the Milky Way (in its present orientation), at physical distance about 200 kpc from the Milky Way and moving away at about 200 km s−1.

Low-excitation blobs in the Magellanic Clouds
Aims. We study an unknown, or very poorly known, interstellar H component in the Magellanic Clouds. This is the first study ever devoted to this class of objects, which we call Low-excitation blobs (LEBs). Methods. We used low-dispersion spectroscopy carried out at ESO to obtain emission line intensities of Hα, Hβ, and [O ] (λλ 4959+ 5007) for 15 objects in the Large Magellanic Cloud and ...
متن کاملThe Star Formation History of the Large Magellanic Cloud
We present the first-ever global, spatially-resolved reconstruction of the star formation history (SFH) of the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC), based on the application of our StarFISH analysis software to the multiband photometry of twenty million of its stars from the Magellanic Clouds Photometric Survey. The general outlines of our results are consistent with previously published results: follo...
متن کاملThe high-velocity clouds and the Magellanic Clouds
From an analysis of the sky and velocity distributions of the high-velocity clouds (HVCs) we show that the majority of the HVCs has a common origin. We conclude that the HVCs surround the Galaxy, forming a metacloud of ∼ 300 kpc in size and with a mass of ∼ 3×109 M⊙, and that they are the product of a powerful “superwind” (about 10 58 ergs), which occurred in the Magellanic Clouds about 570 Myr...
متن کاملA spectroscopic survey of carbon stars in
We summarise the progress of a large-scale spectroscopic survey of carbon stars in the Magellanic Clouds, using the Two-degree Field multi-object system on the Anglo-Australian Telescope. To date we have obtained spectra for about 2000 stars. The spectra have 2 A resolution , S/N 50 and yield radial velocities accurate to about 5 km s ?1. They are therefore ideal for tracing the kinematics of t...
متن کاملKinematics of massive stars in the Small Magellanic Cloud
We present radial velocities for 2045 stars in the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC), obtained from the 2dF survey by Evans et al. (2004). The great majority of these stars are of OBA type, tracing the dynamics of the young stellar population. Dividing the sample into ad hoc ‘bar’ and ‘wing’ samples (north and south, respectively, of the line: δ = −77◦50′ + [4α]′, where α is in minutes of time) we f...
